Album: Sri Lanka March 06 As a family we want to keep traveling to foreign cultures a valued hobby. We chose Sri Lanka as our vacation destination for March 2006 mainly due to the fact that Isalena’s godmother, Christina, lives there with her boyfriend Duminda. This made our preparations so much easier – and we could fully enjoy every day of our vacation. Thank you, both of you!
During the first few days we were able to acclimatize at Christina’s and Duminda’s cozy house in Unawatuna. The picturesque village is situated at one of the most beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka. Subsequently, we headed off in an air-conditioned van with our Driver, Chanadana, for nine days through the southwestern part of the island. The first part took us to the sandy beaches along the south coast – Weligama, Mirissa, Mambantota and Kirinda. Already on the second day, we arrived in the mountains. Ella and Haputale offered breathtaking views of the Southern Province. The highland landscape is mainly shaped by the aesthetic tee plantations, primeval forest, water falls and historic sights. We were able to indulge in all of this during a two-hour train ride from Haputale to Nanu Oya (at Nuwara Eliya). Kandy (to the North of Nuwara Eliya) is the cultural center of the country, a.o. with the Toothtemple, the country’s largest university, and a proud past. In the vicinity of Kandy we visited the Botanic Gardens of Peredeniya and the Elephant Orphanage Pinawela. The ascent of the temple-mountain Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) on the numerous steps is an experience worth the effort! On the way back to Unawatuna, we paid a visit to a turtle hatchery south of Bentota – where we ended our roundtrip with a three-hour riversafari.
Back in Unawatuna we rented a lovely cabin in the cozy Shangri La Guesthouse for the remaining week. The bay surrounding Unawatuna, the contact with the local population – in particular the hospitality of Duminda’s parents – and the great food of Kingfisher@container made our vacation a very special experience.
